The final day started off with a beautiful morning and heated competition as the athletes worked their way to the finals. Brazil’s Gabriel Medina put on an exceptional performance, winning the gold spike trophy, $40,000, and another $1,500 for being voted the MVP of 2012.
Dawn broke on the fourth day of competition to reveal more sheet-glass conditions and a very rippable swell. Kicking off the round of 24, the likes of Lopez, Occy, Reynolds, Flores and a few others put on blistering performances to move on to the Round of 16. The day ended with tough match-ups as both Gudauskas brothers, Medina, Florence and a few others battled their way through the Round of 16 to the quarter finals.
Day 3 saw numerous impressive performances. Reynolds, Simpson, Gudauskas, Occhilupo and Medina all showed great displays of surfing, each earning MVP nominations.
Experience prevails in the second day of competition. Names like Occy, Lopez, and Knox advance to the round of 24.
